Re: Ellana's Cultural Studies on Humanity:- Chapter 36 On Human Government Palaces Pt6 Madrid Royal Palace
After months, I finally mustered up the courage to write this review. It’s disheartening how long it takes to write when you’re not using your native language…
At first, I wanted to wait for an other installment taking place in France and/or for chapter 42 because of lol JOKES lol, but then I realized I’d never have the patience to wait now that I finally wrote all these paragraphs. Oh well. 36 is in the same multiplication table as 42, and Spain is France’s neighbor (plus there is a French ambassador), so close enough.
I guess it means I’m now contractually obligated to leave a comment in the next France-related chapter and in Chapter 42...
As far as I’m concerned, Ellana’s Cultural Studies came to life at a moment I scarcely had time for the Board. And now that the months of July and August – during which hopefully I’ll have more free time – are here, I realize how much content this saga now features.
Of course I’m not telling my life story for the pleasure of it, just to explain one thing: I’ll be honest, I haven’t read all the chapters in detail. Some chapters, I read fully. Some, I skimmed through. And some, I skipped. So this will be more of a general comment to leave my impressions on the saga as a whole. I may make a few mistakes due to not know each chapter by heart, and for them I apologize in advance.
I most likely will never have the time (or, more importantly, the energy) to leave one comment on each chapter, but I thought I’d at least leave one with my general thoughts. A saga that long, and updated that regularly, deserves all the encouragements it can get.
To start, I like the idea that this saga is first and foremost a gigantic world tour/road trip. It allows to feature women, professions, and outfits from many countries and during many contexts. Uniforms, casual clothes, fancy clothes, sports clothes... Even some more fictional uniforms (Men in Black outfit). The saga features many locations and situations as well – toilet cubicles, locker rooms, closets, bushes… the classic ‘a uniform stealer finds women mugged by her rival and knocks them out again’ which was displayed several times in this very chapter. Such diversity is always a plus - and the biggest asset of the saga.
Of course, the story becomes more complex over time. New characters are introduced… In that regards, L and M becoming main characters truly changed the dynamic of the story compared to the very first ‘Ellana-solo’ chapters. And for the better, I think. What started as a “road trip” became a chase with two sides trying to one-up each other, and a lot of unlucky women caught in the crossfire and relieved of their clothes. This is, I think, the best thing that could happen to the story. It allows for more action, more suspense, and more varied situations, since it gives stakes to Ellana constantly being on the run, and can even lead to episodes in which she's brought to the MIB custody and has to break out. Now, the question is how long this new formula can last… I also appreciate the character development – Ellana getting used to some Earthly customs and meeting friendly people, L and M questioning their actions and starting to see Ellana as some sort of ‘friendly rival’ / kindred spirit... A long-runner needs to change over time, while also keeping enough elements of its classic formula. As of now, this saga does exactly that. Hopefully, it'll keep doing it.
The sci-fi aspects give an edge that sets this saga apart from others. This Board has already seen ventures in the genres of spy flicks, historical novels, medieval fantasy, and superhero stories, so sci-fi feels like an other logical step. Ellana’s powers (that kiss of knowledge!
) or the Men in Black’s gadgets allow for scenarios that differ from the classic scenes – though L and M also allow for more classic takedowns. Good balance I think.
Ellana is a serviceable main character. I don’t have strong feelings about her, but her shoulders are strong enough to carry the plot. Her drive to acquire knowledge and her “scientific” curiosity are the drive of the plot, and a good way to have the story move forward (and move all across the world). Her (literal) “alien” point of view about Earth can be amusing sometimes, but sometimes her attitude also annoy me a bit. I prefer the dynamic between L and M, though they also have moments I dislike – simon pointed out their brutality sometimes. But that’s personal opinion. I guess I’m affected by the news. Reading about authority figures (which the MIB are in a way) using violence against the citizens they’re supposed to protect and get away scot-free… Let’s just say it makes me uncomfortable. But from a narrative standpoint, their attitude makes sense. The two sides are supposed to be morally grey anyway.
The story in general combines a relatively light-hearted atmosphere (compared to other of your works) with a morally grey setting (two morally grey sides), which combines well. Not my favorite kind of atmosphere, but one I can enjoy.
I don’t know if it is deliberate, but (at least in the early chapters I read in details) there seems to be two different “genres” when it comes to the uniform stealings. I elaborate: L’s and M’s scenes usually feature bondage and underwear-clad victims (with some exceptions – that’s my luck, this very chapter contains one – poor Maximé
That's because she was French, I'm sure of it!
The Hundred Years War will never end!
). On the contrary, Ellana’s scenes often feature no bondage and full-frontal nudity. It gives two different atmospheres to the uniform stealings – like some sort of “two in one” package. In that regards, I welcome the addition of L and M. Though the latest chapters seemingly muddle things a bit – Ellana seems to have added bondage to her tactics. Earth USB-customs are rubbing off on her...
Finally, I’d have one thing to say not exactly about the story itself, but its updates. And I know it’s a detail, but frankly it’s been something that's been bugging me and that I’ve been wanting to say for a long while now. I’ll be honest and blunt, I’m not a fan of the numerous posts you add to give links. Not a fan AT ALL. Or, more accurately, I’m not fond of the fact they’re posted individually – sometimes minutes apart from each other, sometimes days apart from each other. It makes keeping up to date with the latest stories a bit of a chore. Personally, I don’t enjoy seeing a story has been updated on the Board’s home page, only to find there’s no chapter or comment, just a link to one picture. And, to speak frankly, sometimes the picture is interesting – and sometimes they’re not. One (extreme) instance, but that left an impact on me, I didn’t necessarily need a picture leading to a coke banana in a USB story...
Plus, it has the side effect of invisibilizing the updates of all the other stories – since it usually supersedes any other story on the Board’s home page almost immediately after it was uploaded/updated (sometimes literally a few minutes after it was uploaded/updated)... before anyone has a chance to see an other story has been uploaded on the home page.
(And it breaks my dreams about MIB’s logo, but that’s just my stupid mind attempting a joke.
)
Well, I surely took a lot more time than anticipated on the story's form... That’s just my personal thought, but that was something that’s been bugging me for quite some time now. I’d suggest posting all these links in one go with one post. Not even necessarily immediately afterwards - it could be a good way to return to the story a couple of days later. But not one by one at an irregular pace!
To conclude, I have to talk about Maximé. Because this is the first time I’ve ever heard about this female first name. I can’t accept the fact my countrymen could be devious enough to choose such a name...
To conclude for real, my big gripe with the story’s form (e. g. the too numerous updates) notwithstanding, I’m very glad to see the story section is very much active thanks to this long-runner. Good luck for your next chapters! Let's hope it'll reach at least chapter 42. Because frankly, the joke about the meaning of the universe is within reach...

Re: Ellana's Cultural Studies on Humanity:- Chapter 36 On Human Government Palaces Pt6 Madrid Royal Palace
Hi Rufus
Thanks very much for taking the time to read and review ECS, don't worry top much about about taking some things out of context, I appreciate you taking the time to write this review and for the kind words of encouragement.
When Arc and I discuss concepts for each ECS story we try to be as varied and diverse as possible. Whether thats the different uniforms that are stolen, the professions of the women involved, the locations of the thefts and the different ethnicities of the victims. We try to be as diverse as possible since while Caucasian girls are indeed cute, there are 5 Billion women on earth which equates to plenty for Ellana to choose from. The funny thing was I was talking with Arc the other day and he said one of the main strengths of ECS was the setting of each story, and how we mould the plot of each chapter around the setting. So if it's set in the far east, then our agents will find their stolen uniforms a little too small. We also like to keep the situations as unique and varied as possible. My particular favourite to write was when Ellana replaced a uniform stealer herself to foil an art theft plot on the MS Island Princess
Indeed, it was always our intention to give L & M a voice to make them more than just the faceless agents of a super secretive government agency, ever since they first appeared in The Night Shift , which can be described as the first true Ellana story despite much of the story being told from Nikki's perspective. We decided that the turning point would be the chapter immediately after the cruise ship. When for Ellana the road trip ended and the chase began. And when L & M emerged as main characters in their own right, along with the rest of TFE who we have loosely based on the characters of a particular long running US crime show. I will not spoil whats coming next but what I can reveal is that their will be more character development with regards to Ellana, our agents and most of all Nikki herself. As all our heroines are thrust into a situation against a new dangerous foe, after this series of royal palace adventures.
When I read some of the stories of the board, I noticed that there weren't many sci-fi stories on the board. So I thought to redress that balance, first with my sci-fi horror series Containment Breach , then Terror in Alaska and now with ECS. The most interesting thing about Ellana's kiss is it can only pick up what information she needs to pass for the woman/girl she replaces at the time. It couldn't detect secret lovers; for instance the two college girls in Tokyo or the amorous astronauts on the ISS, which as lead her into trouble.
I'am glad you like that balance between Ellana's unique takedowns and the agents more traditional methods.
I'am curious, what are the things that annoy you about Ellana? When Arc and I conceptualised her, we wanted to go for a truly unique character, a kind of clumsy genius who as a lucky streak a mile wide with a thirst for knowledge. But she's also lonely, Kremm and Nikki being her only friends. Essentially a stranger in a strange land. There will more to come from Ellana, in regards to her character especially in the next 3 part story where we see her relationship with Nikki grow even more and put into situations where we will see different sides to her character. Back when Arc and I first discussed how we wanted to develop L & M, we thought that a mother/daughter dynamic would work well between them. After all, L as sacrificed much including a life with her daughter Rachel ( who will be introduced later in the story) and treats M much like her own child. Despite the fact, that the two do fight on occasion L does have M's best interests at heart. And I'am pleased with how they continue to develop, L is the badass grizzled marine vet and the MiBs best tracker ( think Marshall Sam Gerrard, Leroy Jethro Gibbs from NCIS and Jack Bauer rolled into one) whereas M is a pessimistic, unlucky but thoughtful partner. They both see the necessity of what they have to do, they may not like it ( M most of all) but they cannot deny USB is extremely handy. Granted its not worked well for them most of the time, but they will continue to do it until the chase is over. It was always the intention for the agents steals to have a clear contrast to that of Ellana's. Ellana herself is elegant and tries to cause the least amount of pain possible to her victims, whereas L & M use their military training to overpower their victims which most of the time is brutal and direct. For L its just muscle memory but for M it's uncomfortable, in spite of this she defers to her boss because of the loyalty she as for her. They also have a theme of necessity, since the agents have a much better chance to catch Ellana disguised than not. I generally prefer to have both sides have that morally grey viewpoint, since it reflects the world we live in.
It's funny you should say that since my original intention with The Night Shift was to be Nikki tracking a lethal alien shapeshifter through her hospital but Arc told me that lethal aliens are all too common and it was about time we had a light hearted fun story about an alien shapeshifter. One that is on Earth for a combination of scientific research and tourism. And so Ellana was born. Judging by how popular the series is, I'am glad I agreed. You could call Ellana a departure from my usual mix of lethal and non lethal content, one l'am quite enjoying.
It was a deliberate act in the earlier chapters for Ellana to leave her victims naked and either bound, unbound or just gagged. This represented the fact she was new to our world and had to learn through her mistakes the best way to restrain naked human women. So by the time it came to Chapter 5, Ellana being Ellana had learned that bondage is best. Although she will adapt and leave some victims unbound, particularly those she intends to be for a while so the act of bondage is unnecessary. With L & M they are more traditional, except with Maximé where L decided that taking the woman's underwear would sell the disguise better. Although being American I doubt it was anything personal with regards with Maximé being French. More like our attractive mature French lady walked into the wrong bathroom
. I intend to write a funny dialogue between Nikki and Ellana which will explore why she takes everything from her victims. ( Other then her being a perfectionist, of course. And that she finds the naked female form most pleasing to look at.
) But I would say that Ellana utilising bondage is more her learning than Earth rubbing off on her. The inclusion of L & M along with underwear clad victims was designed with the "two for one" in mind. I know that many of our fellow board members have different tastes, so I wanted to cater for a much larger audience.
Yeah, my apologies about that. Most of those posts are the behind the scenes snippets that I thought would give some context to the story and help readers visualise the world of Ellana. And the outfits that are getting stolen by both parties. The banana coke was my idea of humour, as I thought I had made it up just to find its a real thing.
But seriously, I will keep in mind what you said. The epilogues and reports I can post immediately after but with the behind the scenes stuff, I definitely give say a couple of days until I do another post and say all in one go. Thanks for the advice. I'am sorry for any inconvenience my irregular posting as caused.
Well with Maximé, I was inspired by a certain character from Harry Potter, Madame Maximé or as everyone knows her Hagrids belle.
Although I looked it up and apparently it's not a common French name.
Thanks very much rufus, I appreciate that and I would like to extend my own wishes of good luck in return for all your future projects.
And I don't know if you've already read them, but I would recommend Ellana's investigation into the Mickey Mouse Theocracy in Paris, her investigation into the Elysees Palace home of the Floridian( I meant French
) president and finally the Olympic trilogy. All are good stories set in France and have numerous cute French girls ending up in one form of undress or another.
Thanks very much for taking the time to read and review ECS, don't worry top much about about taking some things out of context, I appreciate you taking the time to write this review and for the kind words of encouragement.

Re: Ellana's Cultural Studies on Humanity:- Chapter 36 On Human Government Palaces Pt6 Madrid Royal Palace
I'm glad to hear about the future changes you and Arc intend to implement. A long-runner - especially one that's using a formulaic / episodic format - needs regular tweaks or else it might lose its edge.
Ellana indeed seems to have become your flagship series - and I'm happy to see it has found its audience, even if I'm only half-part of it
-. It definitely has its own identity.
Though I confess I don't give up on the hope you'll venture once more in the realm of historical one-shots...
(Plus, her work ethos as a scientist is rock bottom - but I suppose in Zenobia things are different.
)
Though in all honesty, I think the setting plays the biggest part in my sentiments about the characters - whether it's about Ellana or L and M. The kind of morally grey atmosphere ECSH proposes simply isn't my favorite anymore - and has stopped being it for years now. Your goal is for your fictions to reflect the world we live in, but personally the more years pass, the more disillusioned I grow towards the world we live in, so I suppose I'm looking for something else in fictional worlds.
That's a problem I have with many pieces of fiction in fact - like Emile Zola's books or Kubrick's filmography. I admire their talent at their craft, I see all their hard work... but man do I find their works bleak and depressing! Guys, if I want to feel bad, I only have to look at the news. I don't need your help.
Now ESCH isn't on the same level as Zola's books when it comes to bleak depressing reality, of course (and thank Goodness for that!), but the underlying logic behind my reaction is similar.
So I think I'll lobby to have France appear once more!
But if you allow me to be the annoying nerd for one paragraph, I'd like to say Maxime is her family name. Her first name is Olympe - a rare old-fashioned French name.
Maxime is a male first name.

A tough question to answer - because I myself have a hard time putting a finger on it. We've clearly entered the domain of feelings, and it's more of a general impression than a specific trait. Plus, that's not something that should be changed, because it would unnaturally twist her character into something else. And I certainly won't ask Ellana to stop being... well, Ellana! Maybe you can say it's a side-effect of her main drive: her detached curiosity - whether as a scientist or as a tourist. I perceive some sort of nonchalance / lack of caring that rubs me the wrong way for some reason. And I'm sure it was the not the point, but that's how I receive it. I admit it has to do with the bad first impression she left me when I read the first chapters - those things are hard to shake off.I'am curious, what are the things that annoy you about Ellana?

Yes, I remember I saw those passing by. I have some memories of the EuroDisney one; and the Olympic trilogy I read more or less thoroughly - I recall it's the moment I fully realized the "two in one" nature of the story as far as stealing uniforms go. Not sure my OCD would bear seeing chapter 22 or chapter 12 above chapter 36 because of a belated review though...And I don't know if you've already read them, but I would recommend Ellana's investigation into the Mickey Mouse Theocracy in Paris, her investigation into the Elysees Palace home of the Floridian( I meant French) president and finally the Olympic trilogy. All are good stories set in France and have numerous cute French girls ending up in one form of undress or another.

In all honesty, I felt embarassed to tackle on this topic - I hesitated a long time before adding it. I don't know, maybe I'm the only one who was bothered by it... or who even noticed (this Board is basically my only social media, so I check from time to time news with my phone even though at that moments I obviously don't write anything)... But at the same time, I knew it was best to clearly address my issue instead of letting it fester. Thanks for taking my opinion into consideration.Yeah, my apologies about that.
I always thought it was Madame Maxime (without acute accent). Why do you break all my dreams?Well with Maximé, I was inspired by a certain character from Harry Potter, Madame Maximé or as everyone knows her Hagrids belle.Although I looked it up and apparently it's not a common French name.

Thanks! Hopefully, July and August will be a productive period. Try and check if you have the time! Thanks very much rufus, I appreciate that and I would like to extend my own wishes of good luck in return for all your future projects.

For a while, it was the SI series that my flagship series but it has been surpassed by Ellana who has grown in her time and it has been a pleasure working with Arc to bring her story to life.rufusluciusivan wrote: Wed Jul 03, 2024 11:42 am I'm glad to hear about the future changes you and Arc intend to implement. I do intend to do some more historical one shot stories in the future, namely more stories set during WW1 and WW2, particularly the "What If?" Assassination of Adolf Hitler and an attempted assassination of Winston Churchill by a nazi agent. Not to mention some Metal Gear Solid inspired one shots and more video game inspired stories. Although I'am committed to ECSH so they may be a long time in coming.
Hmm? It was intended that Ellana have some sort of naivety when she first arrived on Earth. To have that sort of detachment a visitor to our planet would have, after all she is from an advanced civilisation and she's observing a culture that's 200 years behind her so some detachment is too be expected. While she won't change completely, the idea with her relationship with Nikki is to make Ellana have a greater appreciation for humanity and see its potential.
( Well you certainly wouldn't find Ellana stuck in a lab, she's more a...hands on kind of scientist. As many in the Xenoanthropological Society are.

Yeah, while I have created Darala and the city of Stormhold as part of my fantasy arc in the The Blood universe, that too is quite dark and morally grey as well. I think it's part of being British

Now I must confess that while I have watched many of Kubrick's movies ( and I don't really like all of them, truth be told.) I haven't read any of Zola's books so I can't really comment. But I guarantee that ECSH won't be as bleak as that.
I think the Olympic trilogy holds the most record for the most uniforms stolen by all the main characters, so far in the series but I could be wrong.

Your very welcome, Rufus. Its not something you should feel embarassed about raising. It was a fair point, I'am glad you aired it out and clarified it. If you have any other concerns then feel free to tell me, it's an open forum after all.
Thanks for clearing that up, I remember that I had a similar issue with Italian girls names until Arc clarified that for me. I could always change her name to Maxine, which i hope is a French name. When we do concepts for Ellana, I do a lot of research into finding appropriate names for her victims. For example; looking up the names of women in Malaysia for Chapter 31 was a very enlightening and fun experience.

I'am glad to hear that. If I have the time then I will try to look after your work. Its the least I can do after all.

Re: Ellana's Cultural Studies on Humanity:- Chapter 36 On Human Government Palaces Pt6 Madrid Royal Palace
Well, given how much time she spent in Europe and North America (and a bit in Japan as well), it was logical she'd go there. African clothes sound promising. So do Latin American ones - love the colorful outfits they have in Peru for instance. And Shahnaz Akbari and the Persian Shinobi has already shown the potential of Middle-East's clothes...I think the Olympic trilogy holds the most record for the most uniforms stolen by all the main characters, so far in the series but I could be wrong.I wouldn't have minded if you wanted to review those French set chapters, but I understand what you mean about OCD it would drive me crazy too.
Well, watch this space while we have no plans for Ellana to return to France...yet. I wouldn't rule it out.
Currently, we are planning trips to Africa, the Middle East and South and Central Americas. The ambition is for Ellana ( and in some cases Nikki, if her duries permit ) to visit all the continents of the earth ( except Antarctica, nothing to see there
) at least once in her journeys. There is so much on our little blue planet Ellana hasn't seen yet, and outfits she hasn't stolen yet.
Technically, there are scientists in Antartica...
