It was one thing to escape detection in here but Alice wondered how she would make it out of the hospital. She knew one thing for sure. That ***** wasn’t going to get her hands on Lexi. She would rip the throat out of anyone that tried.274

Grabbing the laundry bag, she dragged it carefully to the door and scooped the corridor. Empty. Alice moved as fast as she could considering her disguised package. She was almost at the elevator when she heard quick footsteps so she ducked into the room closest. Alice couldn’t believe her luck. The room was empty except for a room attendant who was stripping the soiled linens.275

“Hey, what are you doin’ with that laundry bag? You better not be stealin’ the towels!”276

Alice forced a smile on her face. “Oh no. I was looking for you. I thought I’d help by changing the linens.”277

“You’ll get me fired doin’ that. Last thing I need is some do-gooder messin’ with my job.”278

Alice pointed out the window. “Oh my God, look at that.”279

The room attendant turned to look out the window. Alice grabbed the bedpan off the top of the trolley striking the room attendant hard across the head.280

“I’m sorry,” whispered Alice as she stripped the unconscious room attendant of her uniform.281

Within two minutes, Alice was changed and had stowed the laundry bad with Lexi in it on the trolley. She tied up her blond curls and checked her reflection.282

Here goes nothing she thought.283

She calmly pushed the trolley out in to the corridor and keeping her head down, casually strolled out of the hospital via the staff exit. Once outside Alice extracted Lexi from the laundry bag and ducked into the bushes behind the hospital. Ten feet in, she pulled foliage around herself and Lexi and prayed for the cover of night.284
